Biography

I earned a Diploma in Botanical Illustration with Distinction from The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, Scotland, and was honoured with the Lizzie Sanders Award for Excellence in Botanical Illustration. I also hold a Master of Arts in Art History from Birkbeck, University of London. During my time in London, I was fortunate enough to work at the National Portrait Gallery—an experience that profoundly shaped my understanding of art.

Currently based in Calgary, Alberta, I have been an active member of the local arts community here for many years. Over the course of my career, I have had the privilege of taking on a variety of roles—from arts administration and sales, to consulting and exhibition curation—working with numerous galleries and arts organizations in both the commercial and non-profit sectors. I have had the pleasure of working with institutions such as the Leighton Art Centre, the Okotoks Art Gallery, and the Calgary Allied Arts Foundation. In addition to my work as a botanical artist, I also work full-time at Loch Gallery Calgary.

Artist Statement

My attraction to botanical illustration stems from an interest in southern Alberta’s native plants and ecology. Through my creative process, I form a deep connection with each botanical subject. This intimacy with the plants has deepened my appreciation for the complexity of the natural world and the fragility of its ecosystems.

Although my work adheres to the scientific principles of botanical illustration, my roots are firmly planted in the world of fine art. It is only natural, then, that my priority is to create works of art while closely observing plants and their place in the natural world. By using vivid colours, along with dramatic contrasts of light and shadow, I strive to imbue my paintings with depth and three dimensionality, thus breathing life into each plant on the paper.
